Gardeners Are Athletes Too!

As the sun begins to shine our thoughts begin to turn to activities that bring us outdoors.
For many of us, this is the time of year that we are deep into our gardening endeavors.
After a long cold winter we are often excited to begin caring for our existing gardens
and break ground for new gardens. However all of that raking, hoeing, lifting, digging,
kneeling and planting can take its toll on your back. Gardening may not be considered a
sport but it does count as physical activity. As with all activities, you must use the right
form and technique to avoid injury.

Here are a few important tips:

Do the “scissors” when you rake Stand with your right leg forward and your left leg back while you rake. Switch every few minutes. This will keep you from bending and twisting your way into a sore back. Take periodic breaks while you’re working.

Change hands frequently Changing hands when raking and hoeing prevents muscle strain on one side of the body. Try to stand as straight as possible with your head upright.  Pause every few minutes to stretch.

Use long-handled tools Long-handled tools let you avoid bending forwards and sideways as you work, which can cause you to strain you neck or lower back. Check at a garden store for the latest models.

Lift properly Face the object you plan to lift, bend your knees, and draw the load in close to your body.  Use the muscle power of you legs to lift. Don’t lift heavy objects above you waist.  Ask for help moving big flowerpots and bags of soil or garden waste.

Kneel to weed and plant Constant bending and squatting can put strain on your back, neck and leg muscles. You can buy special kneepads and mats that make kneeling on the ground more comfortable. And finally, like all good athletes, drink plenty of fluids throughout your workday. Cool down at the end of your garden workout; try a few gentle stretches or take a quick walk around the block. You’ve earned it!

The Importance of the Health Talk

We recommend that all patients attend our health talk, whether you are a new patient to the clinic or have been a part of our clinic family for years.  The health talk at Glenbourne Chiropractic is a half hour presentation followed by time to answer any questions you may have.  We know your time is important to you and we strive to begin promptly and keep the information concise and relevant.

This is our opportunity to share with you insights into the health and chiropractic industry that we may not have covered during your regular office visits.  The goal is to empower you in your health care decisions and become active participants in your search for wellness.  Many patients leave with a desire to share the information with their friends and family who may also have questions about a specific condition or their overall health. You are encouraged to bring any person you may know that could be helped by Chiropractic care.
